This area is truly a 4-season destination with something for everyone 12 months a year! Our rivers, lakes, streams, and woodlands are just the beginning of your experience in our wonderful city. Visitors can easily enjoy a leisurely afternoon strolling along Burlington’s Scenic Riverwalk or beautiful trails. Adding to the beauty of Burlington’s landscape are dozens of parks, many along the banks of the White and Fox Rivers, offering playground equipment, picnic areas, and fishing. Our rivers and lakes make Burlington a popular destination for boating, fishing and water sports enthusiasts alike. Area lakes include Bohner Lake, Browns Lake, Rockland Lake and Echo Lake - located in the heart of the city.

The Farmers’ Market takes place in Wehmhoff Square Park located in Downtown Burlington every Thursday evening May through October from 3 - 7 p.m. and the Kiwanis Civic Band and B-Town Sounds perform free concerts in Echo Park during the summer. Bring your blanket and picnic basket because you won’t want to miss it! Remember, no visit to Burlington is complete without seeing the Aquaducks Water-Ski Show, the Rotary Barons or the Southern Lakes Blue Devils. The Aquaducks Water-Ski show is free and held on Thursday evenings in the summer at Fischer County Park on Browns Lake. The Rotary Barons are a semi-professional baseball team that began in 1997. You can see them in action yourself during their season, which runs from May through August at Beaumont Field, across from Echo Lake. Last but not at all the least are the Southern Lakes Blue Devils, a semi-professional football team consisting of non-college bound stand-out athletes. The Ironman league consists of 16 teams within Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
Just minutes southeast of Burlington on Rustic Road Hwy. B, you will find two of our area’s most valued treasures - AEppelTreow Winery and Brightonwoods Orchards; a collaborative venture that produces award-winning wines, sweet cider and a large variety of heritage apples in season. Across the street sits Richard Bong State Recreation Area with over 4,500 acres of rolling grassland, savanna, wetlands and scattered woodland.

Burlington’s official nickname, Chocolate City USA, celebrates Nestle USA’s long term commitment to the community as well as the annual ChocolateFest held every year on Memorial Day weekend. ChocolateFest draws visitors from around the country and grows in popularity every year as people come to see what giant chocolate creation has been made to celebrate each year’s theme.

Burlington is home to several historical, educational and entertaining attractions. The historic Malt House Theater is home to The Haylofters, one of Wisconsin’s oldest continuing community theaters. The Burlington Historical Society maintains the Burlington Historical Museum and Pioneer Cabin, offers a self-guided walking tour of Historic Burlington, and has traced the BuR SPUR of Wisconsin’s Underground Railroad. Plus, the Chocolate Experience Museum, Spinning Top Museum, and Logic Puzzles Museum will delight children and adults alike. Known as the home of the Liars’ Club, Burlington boasts the Tall Tales Trail, a self-guided tour of championship lies immortalized on bronze plaques displayed throughout the community.

Medical Facilities


Aurora Memorial Hospital serves this area with over 100 physicians along with the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic. Aurora Wellness Center is a medically-oriented center and is affiliated with Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington. The center features a team of health care professionals, state-of-art facilities and fitness equipment.

The center focuses on improved fitness and overall well-being. All memberships include a new member consultation. The center also offers outpatient rehabilitation services, health education classes and programs for local students. Physical therapists, certified athletic trainers and occupational therapists are on site to treat or prevent work or sports-related injuries and offer pediatric rehabilitation and speech therapy.

What Job or Volunteer Opportunities Does Burlington Offer For Retirees?

Volunteering is an important and satisfying way to be a part of something that contributes to this unique place known as Burlington, Wisconsin. Actually, based on the observations of someone who has lived in seven different cities in his work life, it is my feeling that volunteerism is a way of life in Burlington and a critical thread that weaves throughout the fabric of what makes Burlington a great place to live and do business.

In some ways, what volunteers accomplish for their organization can take a back seat to the simple enjoyment received from working side-by-side with friends, getting out of the house and contributing to the greater good. It is one of the wonderful things about a small community and for newcomers, it is one of the best ways to get to know people and to feel like this new place really is one’s new home.

The volunteer opportunities are limitless. For example, if you are a church member, there are a myriad of activities such as annual festivals, craft shows and participation in the church service itself in which one can get involved. Service clubs continue to be popular and, in addition to regular meetings, they stage events ranging from food festivals to bike rides to arts and crafts shows. And do not forget the Chocolate Festival itself, an event that always is looking for an infusion of new blood.

There are opportunities to serve on committees with the City of Burlington. The Chamber of Commerce depends on volunteers for events such as the Home Expo and the Christmas Parade, to name just two. There are baseball and soccer programs that need coaches and umpires. So if you are new in town or a lifelong resident who has decided to get in the game, stop at the Chamber, a church office or ask a volunteer for a “road map” to getting involved.

And if you decide that being a volunteer sounds like it is right for you, remember that you will be joining a huge “family” of dedicated people who love their community and generously have given of their time and talent to make Burlington the special place that it is. And you just might find that the time you spend volunteering is more rewarding than anything that you might have missed on television!
