Area Description

Cedar Key is a Working Waterfront Community with a year round population of about 700. In the winter, snowbirds cause that number to swell to a couple thousand. This unique village, rich in history, is among the last of its kind in Florida. Many residents work in aquaculture harvesting clams, oyster, stone crabs and other seafood from the nutrient rich waters of Gulf of Mexico.
The village Cedar Key, located on Way Key, is one square mile of land spread over two square miles of water with a total of ten miles of paved roads.
Cedar Key rolls up the sidewalks by midnight. Its a quiet place for folks who enjoy peace and quiet, nature and the slow pace we call Island Time.
Eat well at any of the less than a dozen restaurants.
Sleep well in a condo or a cottage, an RV or a motel.
Take an airplane ride with Marve. Or a boat tour, fishing charter or even a clam boat tour out to a clam lease. Hard shell pasta clams or farmed and wild oysters keep the seafood lovers happy.

    Our primary industry is tourism but it has not overwhelmed the authentic old Florida charm of Cedar Key. Our accommodations include “down home” cottage, eclectic and charming motels, a historic hotel, a bed and breakfast, and condos with incredible views.

There are many restaurants in Cedar Key that include great water views, upscale dining, casual dining, quaint cafes, and several lounges. Although we do not have shopping centers, fast food franchises or movie theatres, most all necessities are offered within walking distance. Golf carts are the most popular means of transportation and are available for rent.

There are two museums, and within a few miles are historical and archeological sites as well as wildlife refuges which many visitors find “breathtaking”. Cedar Key and surrounding islands offer Federal protection for birds and wildlife, so it is not uncommon to observe such rare varieties as bald eagles, white pelicans, osprey, roseate spoonbills in a spectacular natural environment. We are home to a number of outstanding artists and working craftsmen. There are several galleries, shops and studios where local work is displayed. There are also shops that offer clothing, gift items and souvenirs. For fisherman and boaters there is boat dockage, launching ramps, a fishing pier, facilities for boat and tackle rental, and local fishing guides. Sightseeing Tours of the outer island are available. You can view a Civil War era lighthouse designed by General Mead. This lighthouse is opened to the public on two weekends a year, but viewing it from the water is incredible. The Cedar Key Chamber looks forward to sharing the special magic of Cedar Key. Come for a visit.

Cultural Activities


Each spring the Cedar Key Arts Council hosts the Old Florida Celebration of the Arts. This is a juried art show which draws thousands to Cedar Key when our climate is “Chamber of Commerce perfect”. Each Fall the City of Cedar Key and Cedar Key Lions hosts the Cedar Key Seafood Festival. Every month the Arts Center has a different opening and showing for their artists. The Historic Society has a museum that encompasses 2 buildings, and houses an untold number of artifacts from our history. The Cedar Key State Museum houses all of our archaeological and ecological history.

Public transportation


Closest Greyhound bus is 30 miles in Chiefland.
We have a paved airstrip, the shortest in Florida at 2300 feet. With water at both ends and no tower.
Around town folks ride bikes and golf carts.
Closest regional airport is Gainsville.

Medical Facilities


The closest Medical Center is about 30 miles away, and the closest hospital is about 60 miles away. Both locations are accessible by Ambulance, there is one assigned to us, or both MediFlight.


What Will The Climate And Weather Be Like If I Retire In Cedar Key, Florida?

For those of you that retire in Cedar Key, you will have hotter temperatures than other areas of the USA.

Winter temperatures are cool with averages in the mid 50's and highs in the upper 60's. Nights are cold with lows in the low 40's. Expect some rainy days in the winter.

If the weather in the spring is too cold for the outdoors, enjoy some indoor activities in Cedar Key such as a visit to a museum, dining, nightlife or some shopping. Spring temperatures are mild with averages in the upper 60's and highs in the low 80's. Nights are cool with lows in the mid 50's. Humidity may feel "sticky" with muggy evenings. Expect some rainy days in the spring.

Summertime in Cedar Key is a great time to enjoy your retirement with a day at the beach, a local festival or other outdoor activity! Summer temperatures are warm with averages in the low 80's and highs in the low 90's. Nights are mild with lows in the low 70's. Expect a lot of days above 90°. Humidity with lots of moisture in the air may feel oppressive. Expect a lot of rainy days in the Summer.

If you retire in Cedar Key, you can look forward to fall weather activities such as biking on a bike path, hiking, enjoying a walking path and more!
