Area Description

The Deerfield River flows out of southern Vermont through the most rural area of Massachusetts, providing the setting for a variety of outdoor activities including kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing and skiing. Located in the northern Berkshires of Massachusetts, the Deerfield River Valley has large tracts of public land and a burgeoning outdoor recreation industry that is transforming the area into a mecca for active people of all ages. Charlemont is the center of much of the recreation, while Shelburne Falls offers a quaint setting with excellent dining, a former trolley bridge now planted with flowers and a falls featuring glacial potholes that are unique to the area.

Things to Do, Recreation & Fitness


   Outdoor recreation is the focus of the Deerfield River Valley with whitewater rafting, zip line canopy tours, skiing, biking and boating. In addition, Shelburne Falls is known for its great artisans Historic Deerfield is a restored colonial town that attracts history buffs.

Cultural Activities


From summer concert series to lectures and films put on by the many independent schools and colleges in our area, there is an active cultural life in the Deerfield River Valley.

Public transportation


The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority operates several local bus routes in our area and Amtrak runs passenger trains from Greenfield north to Vermont and south to New York.

Medical Facilities


Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield is part of the Baystate Medical system.

All four seasons are well represented in the Deerfield River Valley. Summers are generally comfortable with an occasional heat wave that usually doesn't last long. Fall and spring are gorgeous as the leaves turn deep orange, yellow and red in the fall and the buds emerge in the spring covering the hills in their subtle pastels. Winters are generally snowy and great for skiing, snowshoeing and other fun outdoor activities.
