Located on the shores of Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota serves as the westernmost port of Great Lakes shipping. The Zenith City, as it is sometimes called, is built into the rocky hillside that hugs the shoreline of Lake Superior and the St. Louis River. Duluth welcomes over 1,000 ocean-going and Great Lakes freighters annually, all which pass under the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. Duluth’s main industries include shipping, tourism, healthcare, finance/banking, higher education, mining, communications, and paper. Duluth was rated by Money Magazine as one of the top four Midwestern small cities based on livability. Duluth holds a population of just over 86,000 people according to the 2010 census.

Things to Do, Recreation & Fitness


    Nestled on the western end of Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota offers something for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do in the city, which features 129 city parks, miles of multi-use trails, and scenic shoreline views of both Lake Superior and the St. Louis River. Additionally, Jay Cooke State Park is a short 25 minute drive south of Duluth. This allows for a multitude of outdoor activities in every season!

Entertainment abounds in Duluth. The Duluth Playhouse offers a variety of shows throughout the year, and the recently renovated NorShor Theatre serves as the main stage for their offerings.
The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) plays hosts to numerous concerts, events, and conventions throughout the year. Both the University of Minnesota Duluth’s men’s and women’s hockey teams play their home games at Amsoil Arena in the DECC. Both programs have won multiple national championships in their programs’ histories.

Duluth also offers more than 50 unique restaurants, several craft breweries, and a distillery.

Cultural Activities


Arts, culture, and history are all proudly celebrated elements in Duluth. The Tweed Museum of Art, located on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, is a free museum open daily to the public. It features a permanent collection of over 11,000 objects representing a wide variety of cultures and periods of art history.
The Nordic Center in downtown Duluth states that their mission is, “To preserve and advance Nordic culture through social, educational, and cultural/arts programs that serve the greater community.” They offer a variety a variety of classes, workshops, and different programs throughout the year.
Additionally, Duluth is home to a multitude of statues and sculpture art throughout the city which depict different aspects of Duluth’s history and cultural heritage.

Public transportation


Duluth offers public bus transportation through the Duluth Transit Authority, with routes that span the entirety of the city and the surrounding area. Additionally, Arrowhead Transit offers expanded dial-a-ride service in Duluth and the surrounding region.

Medical Facilities


Duluth offers two level 2 trauma centers, St. Luke’s and Essentia Health. Duluth has a physician population of over 400. One of every seven residents are employed in healthcare.
