Area Description

The City of San Ramon is considered to be one of the most desirable living areas in the Bay Area. San Ramon has 56 parks, which includes 17 school parks; four community centers, two aquatic centers, two libraries, two police stations, four fire stations, eleven elementary schools, two high schools, and a community college.

The City of San Ramon incorporated in 1983, and is located in Contra Costa County, a growing area in the eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area. The City occupies a land area of 18.56 square miles and serves a population of 74,378. San Ramon continues to show strength as a major employer including the world headquarters of Chevron Corporation.

In addition to Chevron, San Ramon is the home of Bishop Ranch, Northern California's largest office park. Bishop Ranch is a 585-acre development set among the rolling hills of Contra Costa County. A location that attracts top tier companies and the-best-and-the-brightest employees. Companies located within Bishop Ranch include Bank of the West, Ford, Robert Half International, Hill Physicians, Armanino, 24 Hour Fitness, IBM, Toyota, Nestle, and five9.

Bishop Ranch is also planning construction of a new City Center comprised of 350,000 square feet of retail space including a movie theater, restaurants, and community services, and is slated for completion by late 2016. Acclaimed Italian architect Renzo Piano, who also designed San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, has been commissioned as the designer for the City Center Plaza.

Subsequent phases of development include 479 residential units, 1 169-room hotel, and four new office buildings totaling 800,000 square feet.San Ramon, surrounded by striking views of Mt. Diablo, was first settled in 1850, and its links to the past remain strong. Forest Home Farms once belonged to the Boone family, and the Glass House Museum showcases what life was like in the Tri-Valley's early days.

Sycamore Valley Regional Open Space Preserve occupies two major ridges located within the region of rolling hills and valleys south of Mt. Diablo, elevations range from about 600 to 1,000 feet.

Cultural Activities


The San Ramon Performing Arts Association offers live theater, music, and dance performances at the 587 seat Dougherty Valley Performing Arts Center. Recent performances include Starship, Hotel California, Recycled Percussion, and many others. In addition, the City of San Ramon has a summer concert series at the San Ramon's Central Park.

Public transportation


San Ramon is located on Highway 680, approximately 25 miles east of San Francisco. The County Connection provide convenient bus service to the community, and San Ramon is a short drive to both San Francisco and Oakland airports.

Bishop Ranch provides bus service to the Bishop Ranch office park from San Francisco and the south bay.

San Ramon is the home of the San Ramon Regional Medical Center, a Tenet Healthcare hospital. San Ramon's weather typifies the Mediterranean climate, temperate, seasonal, and moderate. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are mild and damp. Average January temperatures are a maximum of 58 and a minimum of 38. Average July temperatures are a maximum of 75 and a minimum of 56. January is normally the wettest month, averaging 5.20 inches of precipitation. July is the driest month, with an average of only .06 inches of precipitation. Snow is exceedingly rare.
