Area Description

We are the largest city in what is called the Driftless Region -- i.e. the place the glaciers skipped. Located along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin, our beautiful, almost mountainous bluffs roll for miles around the river, having been formed by water, not the scraping glacier years ago that formed the rest of the tri-state area.

We are a city with a small town feel -- a quaint, vibrant downtown teaming with workers, tourists and local shoppers. Farmers markets abound, providing scrumptious fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods and local artistry. Our ample quantity of global companies mix with our unique local shops to provide a vibrant, economically diverse community. Welcome!

Includes Cities/Towns: Holmen, La Crosse, Onalaska.

We are "Nature's Place to Play" -- having everything from spectacular eagle watching, rock climbing, mountain and road biking, and much more all with a few minutes. Bike trails through our ample marches provide a way to connect with nature while the Mississippi and its might backwaters provide opportunities to canoe, kayak, fish and speed boat. We have a wonderful variety of restaurants -- from French to Italian to Middle Eastern to offering the good old fashioned Midwest, Friday Fish Fry!

Enjoy a lovely meal before heading to the regional arts center, the community theater, the symphony, or one of the four college or university events. There is something for everyone!

Public transportation

We have all of the opportunities to get out and about including local buses, taxis and many walkable destinations from downtown. We also have ways to travel farther -- by train to Minneapolis, Chicago and beyond or through our local airport.

We are hearty people, often not letting the cold weather slow us down. We say it helps us thoroughly enjoy Spring through Fall when we enjoy one of the Midwest's most beautiful fall color displays in our trees. While we, like the rest of the Midwest, have tornadoes on occasion and flooding in some areas (mostly parks) due to the rise of the Mississippi, we residents wouldn't swap the beauty of Mother Nature!
