Mid-Maine is centrally located about 20 minutes from the state capital of Augusta and about an hour north of Maine’s largest city, Portland. Maine’s picturesque mountains and coastline are only a short drive away. Of course, there are lots of wonderful recreational opportunities right here amongst mid-Maine’s small towns, quaint villages and our stunning lakes and rivers. Whether it is physical activity you crave such as: hiking, biking, canoeing, hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing or, more leisure activities like art museums, live theater, movies, shopping or dining - it’s all right here! Mid-Maine is home to two recreational gems, Quarry Road Recreational Area and Kennebec Messalonskee Trails. Quarry Road boasts a world-class trail system and plenty of areas to ski, bike, snowshoe and so much more. Kennebec Messalonskee Trails is an impressive network of recreational trails showcasing the beauty within our communities. Invite your family and friends to stay with you in our area as our hotels, motels and cozy bed & breakfasts are nicely appointed which includes hospitality second to none. The mid-Maine region is home to three hospitals, including a VA hospital, and many health care services. Waterville has been recognized as one of the best places to live and raise a family and our crime rate is remarkably low. One visit to our area is all it takes to fall in love and to want to call it home!

Cultural Activities


Mid-Maine region is home to the largest art museum in state, one of the twelve inaugural cinemas recognized by the Sundance Art House Project, a year-round performance arts venue that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a newly renovated Carnegie library, and a vibrant community-supported arts exhibition and education venue. Explore our historic downtown and visit our independently owned shops and restaurants. Mid-Maine is home to: Waterville Opera House, Maine Film Center, Colby College Museum of Art, Common Street Arts and Waterville Public Library.

Public transportation


BUS: The Kennebec Explorer provides low-cost and convenient community bus service for Augusta, Waterville, and nearby communities. The Kennebec Explorer has been made possible by a partnership that includes, among others, MaineGeneral Health, the University of Maine at Augusta, downtown Augusta employers, Inland Hospital, Waterville business supporters, municipalities, and the Maine Department of Transportation. The Kennebec Explorer is operated by Kennebec Valley Community Action Program. Greyhound bus service is also available in our area.
AIR: Augusta State Airport is located 20 minutes south. Cape Air (with connections to Jet Blue ) offers daily scheduled passenger service non-stop to and from Boston. Bangor International Airport is about 45 minutes north and Portland Jetport is about an hour south; both have access to all commercial airlines.
TRAIN: The Amtrak Downeaster is located about 45 minutes south and is your car-free connection from Brunswick, Maine to Boston, Massachusetts and points in between.

Medical Facilities


There are two major hospitals and a VA hospital in the mid-Maine region: Inland Hospital, MaineGeneral Medical Center and VA Maine Healthcare System (Togus).

Named as a Top Rural Hospital in America for excellence in quality and safety, Inland Hospital is dedicated to helping you stay involved, informed and safe. As a member of EMHS, Inland is part of a family of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers across Maine who are working together to provide you with the right care, at the right time and place.
In its annual rankings of the nation’s best hospitals, U.S. News & World Report ranks MaineGeneral Medical Center as the third-best hospital in Maine. Patients come first at the Alfond Center for Health, MaineGeneral's state-of-the-art inpatient facility in Augusta. MaineGeneral Medical Center's Thayer Center for Health provides a wide range of high-quality outpatient hospital services and programs.

Togus VAMC is a 67-operating bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as a 100-bed Nursing Home consisting of 50 Skilled and Longer Stay beds, and a 50-bed Dementia Unit. It is the oldest veterans' facility in the country, having opened in the fall of 1866. Togus is located about 25 minutes from our area.

What Will The Climate And Weather Be Like If I Retire In Mid-Maine Region?

If you visit Maine in the summer, you can expect temperatures as high as the 90s. Summer nights are usually comfortably cool. Some severe thunderstorms may occur between May and August. Winters are generally cold, but very prolonged cold spells are rare. Average annual snowfall in mid-Maine is 60-110 inches. A "Northeaster" may occasionally drop 10 or more inches of snow in a single day. January is normally the snowiest month, with an average of about 20 inches. Precipitation is generally even throughout the year, although some flooding may occur in late winter and early spring. Maine is rarely subjected to ice storms, hurricanes or tornadoes.
