Area Description

Redondo Beach is one of the three Beach Cities located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 66,748 at the 2010 census. The city is located in the South Bay region of the greater Los Angeles area. The primary attractions include Municipal Pier and the sandy beach, popular with tourists and a variety of sports enthusiasts. North Redondo contains some of the city's major industry and commercial space, including the inland aerospace and engineering firms that are part of Southern California's long space legacy. It is also home to the South Bay Galleria shopping center and a revitalized Artesia Boulevard. North Redondo is the home of the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, one of the South Bay's premier cultural facilities, and home to the Los Angeles Ballet, Distinguished Speaker Series, Kala Koa Entertainment, and a diverse range of other cultural and entertainment events. Redondo Beach is a full-service city with its own police, fire and public works departments, two public libraries, a performing arts center, fifteen parks, thirteen parkettes, a large recreational and commercial harbor including King Harbor, a 1,500-slip private craft port; the Redondo Beach Pier and Seaside Lagoon; and a bathing and surfing beach. The WAVE provides convenient, inexpensive shared-ride transportation to destinations within Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach and designated satellite facilities in adjacent communities of Manhattan Beach and Torrance.    The Aviation Gymnasium is part of Aviation Park, a 14-acre recreation facility located at Aviation and Manhattan Beach Boulevards in northern Redondo Beach. The facility provides space for numerous recreational programs.

Redondo Beach's Summer Drama Camp has provided camp participants with a quality education in performing arts and the various elements of stage management.

At the Redondo Beach Farmer's Market you can enjoy shopping in a friendly atmosphere with a view. Open every Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Redondo Beach Farmers Market is located in front of Veterans Park. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Fresh and Dried fruits Jams and Preserves, Honey, Cut Flowers, Bakery Goods, BBQ Chicken, Fresh, Vegetables, Nuts, Fresh Fish, Kettle Corn, and Bedding Plant.

The Seaside Lagoon opens for public use beginning May 24, 2014 and is open daily through Monday September 1. Situated on the southwest corner of Harbor Drive and Portofino Way in Redondo Beach's King Harbor, the Lagoon operates from 10:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. daily throughout the summer months. Closed for Special Event July 3 & 4, 2014. The large saltwater lagoon, offers trained lifeguard supervision. Besides swimming, the Lagoon offers a large sand area for sunbathing, children's play equipment, snack bar facilities provided by Ruby's Restaurant , and volleyball courts. There is also a grassed area and luau shelter for day and evening events.

The City of Redondo Beach has existing franchise agreements with four taxicab companies operating a total of 160 licensed taxicab vehicles approved for operation in Redondo Beach. Only these four companies are authorized to pick up within Redondo Beach city limits. The taxicab vehicles are identified by an official City of Redondo Beach Taxi decal that is visibly displayed on the rear of the vehicle. Each vehicle issued a decal is fully insured and is inspected annually. Many of these vehicles are also approved to operate in adjacent jurisdictions including the cities of Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Lawndale, and Torrance. (All Yellow Taxi, Bell Cab Company, South Bay Yellow Taxi, United Independent Taxi Driver's.)
