Area Description

Seward County includes two towns, Liberal with a population of 22,000 and a smaller town, Kismet.
There is a variety of things to do in Seward County including hunting fishing and golfing. Liberal has a nice waterpark, three golf courses and a miniature golf course. It is the home of a semi-pro baseball team, the Liberal BeeJays, and the International Pancake Race which is held on Shrove Tuesday.

Liberal also has the fifth largest air museum in the nation, Mid-America Air Museum. Liberal is an exciting community that holds many events throughout the year including a county fair, PRCA Rodeo, air show, duck festival, baseball tournaments and a Cinco de Mayo celebration.

Liberal is also the home of Dorothy and the Land of Oz Museum and hosts Oz-Fest every two years in October. Kismet hosts the Little Worlds Fair each year over Labor Day weekend.

Because of our diverse population, there are many dining opportunities including Mexican, Chinese, Italian and American cuisine. There are many really nice parks where you can relax, walk or ride a bike.

   You can golf on one of 3 golf courses, play miniature golf, swim at the waterpark, hunt pheasant and quail, fish at Arkalon Park, play tennis on one of several courts, attend a semi-pro baseball game, relax in one of the beautiful parks, attend a class at the community college or visit one of the many museums Liberal has to offer.

Cultural Activities


The Baker Art Center holds art classes and hosts many exhibits throughout the year.
Live on Stage II presents a concert series each year.
Seward County Community College/Area Technical School students, Liberal High School students and Rainbow Players present stage plays.

Public transportation


SkyWest Airlines flies a 50 passenger jet to and from Denver several times a day.
The city bus line travels over much of the town with numerous stops to take people to work or shopping for a minimal fee.

Medical Facilities


Southwest Medical Center is a regional hospital that offers quality healthcare services and 24-hour emergency care. Emergency air transport services and assisted living facilities are also available.
There is also a VA Clinic.
