Area Description

Village of 900 people at an elevation of around 6500. Beautiful striking landscape with amazing light. Founded in the mid 1800's due to the rich mining deposits and large empty spaces suited for ranching. An artistic community drawing both contemporary and traditional artists. Situated in an area of dark skies with the Very Large Array nearby listening to the heavens with radio astronomy and the Madgalena Ridge Observatory at 10,600 feet, a multi use research and educational observatory operated by NM Institute of Mining and Technology out of Socorro.

A rich mix of people, including ranchers, artists, astrophysicists and regular folk all mingling together and enjoying each other and the environment. Quiet, peaceful. A great place to retire.
Kelly mine, though closed to mining, still an interesting place to visit. Great hiking trails, hunting and horseback. A photographer's dream come true!
