Denton is most well known for its robust music scene. There are more than 25 music venues, which feature everything from country to classic rock to rap. The nearby University of North Texas boasts the first jazz music school in the country (established in the 1940s) and has produced such well-known musicians as Don Henley, Roy Orbison and Norah Jones.
The University of North Texas has a new football facility, Apogee Stadium, where the Mean Green light up the scoreboard on Saturdays. Both UNT and nearby Texas Woman's University also have basketball programs, in addition to many other intercollegiate teams.
For those looking to get out and get active, pick one of the terrific parks in the city limits, or make the short drive to the Greenbelt trail, which offers hiking, biking, equestrian and canoeing and kayaking. There are also nearby lakes, Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville, that offer fishing activities.

There are three primary theater troupes in town: Music Theatre of Denton, the Denton Community Theater and the Sundown Collaborative Theatre. There are also three library branches in town.

There is a public transit system (DCTA) that operates six days a week, with buses that cover most of Denton (including going to and from both college campuses) and a commuter train that goes to Dallas (connecting directly to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system).
