Best known for the Civil War, the area offers a variety of historical attractions. However, this is only a slice of what the area offers. Gettysburg and Adams County offer a dozen quality golf courses and miles of hiking trails. In the winter, Liberty Mountain Resort shifts their focus from golf to skiing, snow boarding and tubing. The area also offers a plethora of antique shops and boutique shops. Gettysburg alone offers three movie theaters with the latest box office releases, independent films and classics. The area is home to Gettysburg College and Harrisburg Area Community College, providing both adult continuing education and programming for entertainment. A variety of fairs and festivals are hosted throughout the year including music festivals, wine festivals, beer festivals and country fairs. With miles of farmland in Adams County, locally grown produce is sold at farm markets and used to produce flavorful craft beverages that can be sampled at the area's wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries.

The area offers the Majestic Theater which hosts a variety of acts throughout the year including music and stage performances. In addition, the famous Totem Pole Theater provides a summer stock experience with stars from today's television and movie screens. The area is also home to the popular Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival which brings in today's headliners. Through efforts of both the Gettysburg College and the National Park, the area hosts dozens of lectures on both historic and social issues. Music, Gettysburg! is a premier concert series featuring international, regional and local musical artists for the greater south central Pennsylvania region held at the Gettysburg campus of the United Lutheran Seminary. There is always something to engage in.

Public transportation

Visitors can get to Gettysburg using public transportation for their entire trip by traveling on Amtrak and Rabbit Transit. Travelers would start their journey on Amtrak from their point of origin (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. are all serviced daily) and end at Harrisburg. From there, Rabbit Transit will take visitors directly into Gettysburg, with multiple stops available. Please note, the Rabbit Transit service is designed for commuters and is only available at select times of the day during weekdays.
