Area Description

Kossuth County is in the north central part of Iowa. Algona is the county seat with population of just under 6,000. We have a diverse business community with great retail, industry, manufacturing, restaurants, motels, Bed & Breakfast, etc.

Algona has many city parks and outdoor recreational area. Our Senior Citizens center offers a variety of social activities. There are many activities available throughout the year - both on weekdays and on weekends - due to the many service club projects, school and church groups, etc. We have a YMCA with programming for all ages. Our area has something to offer people of all ages.

Includes Cities/Towns: Algona, Bancroft, Burt, Lakota, Ledyard, Swea City, Titonka, Whittemore.

   We have a walking/biking trail. Our State Park offers hiking areas. Algona is a certified Blue Zone community and there are many activities available now and more planned for the future to tie in to that designation. We have a POW Museum, Nativity Scene (constructed by German POW's and donated to the Algona community) and the Kossuth County Agriculture & Motorsports Museum.

We have an arts council and a charitable trust that bring concerts/plays to our area.

Medical Facilities


Our health care center is affiliated with Mercy Health Network. It is affiliated with Mercy Health network and offers a specialty clinic with physicians from nearby Mason City providing Algona area residents with quality health care without the additional travel. We also have a clinic with many well qualified general physicians.

Humidity may feel "sticky" with muggy evenings. Expect some rainy days in the summer.
