Area Description

The city of Odessa, 38 square miles in area, is the county seat of Ector County. Odessa is located in the heart of the Permian Basin area of West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico. The Permian Basin is a large oil and natural gas producing area, so named because of thick deposits from the Permian geologic period found in the area.

In West Texas, the sky is limitless. Nowhere else in Texas do the stars at night shine quite so brightly or do the sunsets seem quite so rosy. The earth displays its own vigor with golden or fuchsia prickly pear cacti blooming with exuberance among live oaks and pines, as desert vistas shimmer far into the distance. From sand hills to craggy canyon peaks to soft mesas to prairies that whirl with summer dust devils, nature needs no introduction in the awe-inspiring terrain that neighbors the City of Odessa, Texas.

   There are many local golf courses - Sunset Country Club, Ratliff Ranch Golf Links, Odessa Country Club, Green Tree Country Club, Nueva Vista gold Club, Ranchland Hills Country Club, Hogan Park Golf Course and Midland Country Club. Recreation areas for summer or winter - Balmorhea State park, Big Ben National Park and White Sands National Monument. Biking - Fort Davis National Historical Site, Prude Guest Ranch has about five miles of trails open to mountain biking. Davis Mountains State Park - camping. Bowling, Odessa has two bowling lanes. Tennis, Odessa has 16 tennis courts in its city parks. YMCA & Mission Fitness- fitness facilities, has indoor swimming pools etc.

Cultural Activities





The Globe of the Great Southwest is located on the Odessa College campus. A regional theatre, the Globe often employs professional actors and designers, but auditions for many roles are open to the community. The Globe's theatrical season runs with the calendar year, and its offerings include classic fare, including American authors, opera, European playwrights, and of course a wide variety of Shakespear's comedies and dramas. Seasonally, the Globe Theatre produces "Happy Birthday U.S.A." and a Christmas-themed play. The Globe is also host to the "Brand-New Opree".

The Permian Playhouse presents a main stage season of plays and musicals, plus a season of youth shosw and a variety of off-season entertainments. One of the oldest arts organizations in West Texas. The Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center has a wide range of performing arts groups. The Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center is a performing arts venue located between the cities of Midland, Texas and Odessa, Texas. Odessa has numerous festivals and events throughout the year - Midessa Boat, RV, Sport and Gun Show, Shrimp fest, West Texas Relays, Mudbug, Fiesta West Texas, Firecracker Fandango, Rock the Desert, Permian Basin Fair and Exposition, Permian Basin Inter-tribal Powwow, CAF Airshow, Empty Bowls Event, Harvest Fair, Merry Marketplace, Taste of the Permian Basin, Tejano Low-rider Car Show and much more. Public transportation




West Texas Opportunities, Inc. - The purpose of West Texas Opportunities Permian Basin Rural Transit District (TRAZ) program is to provide professional, cost effective, coordinated passenger transportation services to the general public in the seventeen counties of the Permian Basin. Clients served are economically disadvantages to include young single mother, veterans, non-institutionalized disabled and non-English speaking Hispanic citizens living in rural areas. Midessa Transportation LLC - privately owned taxi company operating in Midland, Odessa, and Midland International Airport. All Aboard America - The Midland/Odessa Division of All Aboard America can offer a large array of motor coach charter and tour services. Midland-Odessa Urban Transit District (dba EZ Rider) - Urban transportation is the primary responsibility of EZ Rider, an ADA equipped fixed-route bus service. Midland International Airport serves as the region's portal to the world and is also a portal to incoming visitors to the Permian Basin. All areas of the Terminal facilities are full accessible to the handicapped. Area Agency on Aging of the Permian Basin - provides transportation for senior citizens through its various centers for the Elderly Nutrition Program. Transportation is provided for shopping, healthcare, recreation, and so forth.

Medical Facilities


Odessa has grown to become the health care hub for surrounding communities. There are more than 300 physicians in Odessa covering a wide range of medical specialties, over 80 dentists and two hospitals - Medical Center Hospital, Odessa Regional Medical Center. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Permian Basin Campus includes patient practices in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology and General Surgery. The facility houses clinical and patient-related services, an imaging suite, a laboratory and administrative offices. West Texas Cancer Center at Medical Center Hospital has a long history care for cancer patients in Odessa and surrounding communities. Odessa is home to a Veterans Administration Comprehensive outpatient clinic.
