Plymouth County lies in close proximity to the City of Boston and only minutes from Cape Cod. Established in 1620 when the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower to begin their new lives in the New World, the County consists of 26 towns and the City of Brockton. Seven of its towns are coastal on the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay.
The County has 4 distinct areas, Metrosouth and the City of Brockton on its western edge, Cranberry Country to the south and home to a thriving cranberry industry, The South Shore, rich in history, typical New England villages with town greens and white steepled churches and of course Plymouth, America's Hometown complete with unspoiled beaches, secluded pinelands, protected open spaces and nature preserves.
In 2020 Plymouth will be commemorating the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims. You'll find bus and/or commuter rail service to Boston & Providence from many communities. Plymouth County is a region that offers a lot of everything for residents and visitors alike.

Plymouth County offers numerous historic attractions such as Pilgrim Hall Museum, the Nation's oldest history museum, Plimoth Plantation & Mayflower II (currently in repair in CT through 2019). There's also whale watching, deep-sea fishing, cranberry harvest tours and festivals. Additionally, tin-lantern evening history and ghost tours, an annual America's Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration the weekend before Thanksgiving, many arts & culture museums, breweries, wineries and a distillery, restaurants and seaside dining all along the South Shore's coast offering fresh catch right off the boat. And for birders, we're home to 3 Audubon sanctuaries.
Spend a day at one of our many beaches, delve into Pilgrim history, discover local art & talent at a museum or performance center and sample some of the best food in the Commonwealth.

Cultural Activities

Each Plymouth County area has both history and art & culture museums. Free summer concerts take place in Plymouth & the Village of Onset in Wareham, Art Museums are located in Cohasset, Duxbury, Norwell & Plymouth. Brockton's Historical Society celebrates its shoe industry and its boxing champions; Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Brockton has a Symphony Orchestra and Plymouth a Philharmonic Orchestra offering quality concerts for over 100 years. There's also an annual folk concert and numerous free musical performances on the waterfront and along Main Street in Plymouth Center. There are 3 local theater groups producing plays throughout the year plus numerous choral societies offering seasonal concerts.

Commuter rail service on The Old Colony Line and P&B bus service is available 7 days a week to and from Boston. P&B also offers service to and from Providence. GATRA bus transportation within greater Plymouth is available Monday-Saturday.

Plymouth County is a 4-season region; spring begins cool with temperatures in the 40s but increases by summer to average 70s & 80s temps with occasional "heat waves" (3 consecutive days of 90 plus) but with cool coastal breezes. Fall is mostly picture perfect with temps in the 60s and 70s with bright sunshine and winters can be either mild with under a foot of snow or as much as 100" in an exceptionally harsh winter.
