Ideally located in the heart of historic Lincoln County, Capitan is home to 2,000 friendly residents and a growing arts community The Village is situated between the Capitan and Sacramento Mountains at an elevation of 6,530 feet. Founded in the 1890's, incorporated in 1941, the Village retains its small town country flavor. Buried on the grounds of the Smokey Bear Historical Park is Smokey Bear. The park features fire prevention information, a xeriscape garden with walkable pathways and benches for outdoor enjoyment.

Capitan is the gateway to the The Frontier Trail. The Trail is a tourist favorite because of its beautiful scenery, climate, special events, rodeos, festivals, history, authentic cowboy culture and cusine. The Trail is home to a wide variety of excellent galleries, studios & museums. Follow the Trail and you'll find a eclectic collection of period & contemporary collectibles, vintage, antiques and crafts of the highest caliber- paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, fiber arts, woodworking, glass, basketry, collectibles, vintage, antiques & apparel. Exit the freeways and explore a leisurely drive and a genuine Old West adventure.
