Things to Do, Recreation & Fitness


   Litchfield Parks are conveniently located in neighborhoods throughout the City.

Meeker County Parks have facilities for picnicking, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, and horseback riding!

Litchfield Golf Course, an 18-hole public championship course along the northern edge of Lake Ripley. The golf club has pro shop and Peter’s On Lake Ripley is open 6 days a week with a full service bar and restaurant.

Other recreational facilities include privately-owned fitness centers, four softball fields, town ball baseball, horseshoe pit, two paddle tennis courts, 14 public tennis courts and an indoor hockey rink for hockey and ice skating.

Litchfield Blues provide top-caliber amateur baseball every spring and summer. The Blues play their home games at Optimist Park on the northern edge of town.


Cultural Activities


Litchfield has a thriving theatre which offers three events a year. The Public Library is updated with technology and a good selection of books in print. Litchfield offers one of very few Grand Army of the Republic Civil War museums in the United States. The Forest City Stockade, (located 10 miles from Litchfield)conducts two events a year with a historical setting from 1862 to memorialize the brave pioneers who settled here and who sought safety behind its wall during the Sioux Indian Uprising of 1862. The Litchfield Greater Opera House schedules a variety of musical and theatre opportunities. Check their website for dates and times of events all year long.

Public transportation


The bus system is operated in a joint powers agreement between Meeker County (Litchfield) and Kandiyohi County (Willmar Lakes region). Major airports are available in St. Cloud (45 minutes away) and Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport (1 hour away). The local airport can accommodate private air transportation services.

Medical Facilities


Meeker Memorial Hospital provides a wide range of services including rehabilitation, emergency/urgent care, surgery, behavioral health and may other services. We have clinic with out patient services readily available.


What Will The Climate And Weather Be Like If I Retire In Twin Cities, Minnesota?

For those of you that retire in Twin Cities, you will have colder temperatures than other areas of the USA.

Winter temperatures are cold with averages in the mid 10's and highs in the mid 20's. Nights are cold with lows in the mid 0's. You may have some days below 0°. Expect a few days of rain. Assume a few days of snow with a lot of days with snow remaining on the ground so you can enjoy some winter skiing!

If the weather in the spring is too cold for the outdoors, enjoy some indoor activities in Twin Cities such as a movie, a visit to a museum, dining, nightlife or some shopping. Spring temperatures are cold with averages in the mid 40's and highs in the mid 50's. Nights are cold with lows in the mid 30's. Expect some rainy days in the spring.

Summertime in Twin Cities is a great time to enjoy your retirement with a day at the lake, an outdoor concert, a local festival or other outdoor activity! Summer temperatures are mild with averages in the low 70's and highs in the low 80's. Nights are cool with lows in the upper 50's. Humidity may feel "sticky" with muggy evenings. Expect some rainy days in the summer.

If you retire in Twin Cities, you can look forward to fall weather activities such as biking on a bike path, hiking, enjoying a walking path and more! We have a variety of housing available from $100,000 - $300,000. Several apartment and townhouse opportunities available. Senior housing includes two housing complexes with services as well as several town homes and patio homes. We have rental assistance in one sr. housing complexes with services.

We have a wide range of senior services available, home care, hospice, assisted living, memory care, independent living. We have several private home care agencies available to help with in home care. We have a life line program, wonderful meals on wheels as well as a transit dial a ride bus program 7 days a week. Our Senior Volunteer program (RSVP) is very active; offers volunteer opportunities as well as a Volunteer Driver program which transports seniors and medical assistance riders to medical appointments for a donation.

What Job or Volunteer Opportunities Does Twin Cities Offer For Retirees?

Litchfield Independent School District 465 offers a volunteer grandparent program, there are also many opportunities to volunteer with the museums, Litchfield Opera House and Nursing Home center. Seniors are encouraged and welcome to be employed as we are very short on workforce in our area.
