Named “One of the 10 Coolest Small Towns in America,” Yellow Springs is an eclectic village of approximately 3,500, known for recreational attractions, wonderful shops, unique restaurants, lively arts and healthful living. Green space and farmland create a lovely rural ambience but Yellow Springs is only 12 miles from Wright Patterson Air Force Base and less than an hour from Cincinnati and Columbus.

Founded in the early 1800s, the town quickly became a popular health resort, famous for the curative waters of the yellow spring. An authentic small town, the streets of this thriving community are lined with an eclectic assortment of shops and galleries, as well as a grocery, pharmacy and hardware store. Restaurants offer an eclectic mix of food, art and entertainment. Rich visual and performing arts of all persuasions abound in this vibrant community of artists. Find art all around town, in restaurants and shops, murals on the sides of buildings, a bronze sculpture trail and much more. Several delightful B&Bs, a vintage motel and a luxury boutique hotel offer overnight accommodations.

Young’s Jersey Dairy, located one mile north of Yellow Springs, is a working dairy farm with a traditional ice cream parlor, two restaurants, miniature golf, petting zoo, batting cages, driving range and events throughout the year. Open year-round, it’s especially a favorite summertime stop for a cool scoop of ice cream on a hot day. There is an orchard nearby and several farms, including organic farms and CSA's that provide food to local restaurants and at the Saturday Farmer's Market that runs nearly year round.

Yellow Springs, called the Education Village, values and supports education, offering an array of lifelong learning opportunities. The public school system, recognized as a National School of Excellence, offers a cutting edge project-based learning environment with small class sizes geared to individual development. A child care center and alternative school offer programs for preschool through elementary. Antioch College is a small but innovative liberal arts college with 300 students and Antioch University Midwest provides innovative programs to adult learners. Yellow Springs has a varied employment base from a large international company to small startups and our own brewery. The Center for Business and Education is the home of Antioch University Midwest and a focus location for business growth. Yellow Springs offers myriad opportunities for an active lifestyle. The Little Miami Scenic Trail, part of the longest paved trail system in the country, runs through the heart of Yellow Springs. Natural beauty surrounds with the 1,000-acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve, home to the Yellow Spring, Raptor Center and Trailside Museum, along with miles of picturesque hiking trails. Close by is John Bryan State Park for hiking, picnicking and camping, and Clifton Gorge with scenic waterfalls, limestone cliffs and river rapids. Sports amenities include a community center, seasonal swimming pool, fishing pond, playing fields and tennis courts. The Antioch College Wellness Center provides a state of the art fitness and wellness facility shared with the community. The 2-square-mile village is walkable and bicycles are a favorite mode of transportation.

You can find several other institutions of higher education within a 30-minute drive including Antioch College and Antioch University Midwest right in Yellow Springs. Cultural Activities

Yellow Springs is an arts community, home to many artists and art lovers as well as galleries and a wide array of public art displays, both permanent and temporary. There are several concerts throughout the year from our Community Band, Orchestra and Choir. The World House Choir also performs in Yellow Springs and around the state. Chamber Music Yellow Springs brings world-class chamber music performers to Yellow Springs for several concerts. The colleges and other organizations bring a high caliber of lecturers to Yellow Springs and the residents themselves are recognized experts in many arenas so simply walking into the local coffee shop provides an exciting educational opportunity. Our beautiful library is the busiest in the county. We have two theater groups, YS Kids Playhouse and the YS Theater Company both performing several times a year. And we have a beautiful, newly renovated movie theatre showing first runs, classics and documentaries, considered the best place to watch a movie together.

And the City of Dayton, 30 minutes away, has a Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet, Opera and two theatres along with the Dayton Art Institute, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and Carillon Historical Park. And the National Museum of the United States Air Force is just 15 minutes from Yellow Springs.

Public transportation

We are within a 30 minute drive of the Dayton International Airport and 60 minutes of Columbus and Cincinnati airports. Greene Cats, our local county transit agency provides bus service several times daily between Yellow Springs and other communities in Greene County. Connections provide access to the Greater Dayton region. Uber is also available in Yellow Springs.

Medical Facilities

The Antioch College Wellness Center provides fitness equipment, yoga, swimming and personal training. We have two physicians offices in Yellow Springs, two dentists and one optometrist along with a compendium of complimentary practitioners. Greene Memorial Hospital is 15 minutes south and Soin Medical Center is 15 minutes west, both part of the broader Kettering Health Network one of the top health care providers in the country. The VA Hospital is about 30 minutes west in Dayton.

Health Programs : We actively promote the physical and emotional well-being of seniors through health screenings, professional counseling, fitness classes and other programs.

Transportation: M-F, morning and by appointment. Staff and volunteers help seniors with their transportation needs, driving more than 14,000 miles in 2003, an increase of 15 percent from 2002.

Homemaker Services: By appointment. Helping people take care of themselves in their own homes, we provided more than 4,000 hours of service in 2003, a 16 percent increase from the previous year.

Meals: M & W. Noon meals are served twice a week, providing more than 1,000 hot meals at the Center each year

Volunteer Opportunities: We provide volunteer opportunities for nearly 100 individuals at the Center and refer members to other local organizations that request volunteers.

Information and Referral: Daily, we assist individual visitors and callers with their questions and concerns, including insurance support programs and computer instruction.

Social Programs: Group activities and special events such as potlucks, card games, crafts and quilting groups reduce the isolation and loneliness of seniors—and are great fun.
