The Schroon Lake Region is a wilderness paradise offering a diverse combination of activities for visitors, and true, close-knit Adirondack communities with ample resources for residents.

Our towns (Schroon Lake, NY and Adirondack, NY) have been vacation destinations for decades, with a long history based in backcountry pursuits, water fun, and renowned cultural events. Community assets include a variety of organizations and churches, and our Chamber of Commerce is active in supporting and promoting local businesses.

Things to Do, Recreation & Fitness


   The Schroon Lake Region is centrally located between the City of Plattsburgh and The City of Glens Falls and Saratoga. We have a beautiful 9 mile long 1 mile wide lake surrounded by beautiful mountains that are great for hiking and hunting, many ponds for kayaking and fishing. We have some great small shops, but we are with in an hours drive to Lake Placid, Lake George Outlets, and Glens Falls, Ticonderoga, and Plattsburgh which has big box stores.

Cultural Activities


During the summer our town is bustling with Arts. We have two art galleries, one located at the Town Store and the other which is called Giant Mountain Studio. Every Wednesday evening during the summer we offer free contra dancing in the town park, and our Schroon Lake Arts Council provides Open Mic sessions in our turn of the century Boat House Theatre and on Thursday nights live concerts. Along with some of our local restaurants that offer Open Mic events and live entertainment. Schroon Lake is also proud to boast that we have one of the oldest and well known opera/music summer schools in the country, Seagle Music Colony. In 2015 it celebrated its 100th Anniversary and had multiple shows of well known musicals and operas through out the summer.

Public transportation


Plattsburgh International Airport is 50 minute drive due north from us, Burlington International Airport is approx. 1 1/2 hours from Schroon, and Albany International Airport is due south approximately one hour. The Amtrak Train Station is 25 minutes from Schroon Lake in the Town of Ticonderoga. There is available VA transportation to the Albany VA hospital.

Medical Facilities


We have a small hospital located in Ticonderoga which is located approximately 25 minutes away, we also have three major hospitals with in an hour of Schroon Lake. The first being GLens Falls Hospital, the second being Fletcher Allen @ CVPH Medial Center, and lastly Adirondack Medical Care center in Saranac Lake. We also have a health center located here in Schroon Lake that is part of the Hudson Headwater Health network.


What Will The Climate And Weather Be Like If I Retire In Schroon Lake Region, New York?

For those of you that retire in Schroon Lake Region, you will enjoy warm summers, a cool fall, a cold winter and a temperate spring!

Winter temperatures are cold with averages in the low 20's and highs in the low 30's. Nights are cold with lows in the low 10's. You may have some days below 0°. Expect a lot of rainy days in the winter, great for a day of shopping in Schroon Lake Region! Assume some snowy days in the Winter with a lot of days with snow remaining on the ground so you can enjoy some winter skiing!

If the weather in the spring is too cold for the outdoors, enjoy some indoor activities in Schroon Lake Region such as a movie, a visit to a museum, dining, nightlife or some shopping. Spring temperatures are cold with averages in the low 40's and highs in the low 50's. Nights are cold with lows in the low 30's. Expect a lot of rainy days in the Spring, great for a day of shopping in Schroon Lake Region!

Summertime in Schroon Lake Region is a great time to enjoy your retirement with a day at the lake, an outdoor concert, a local festival or other outdoor activity! Summer temperatures are mild with averages in the mid 60's and highs in the mid 70's. Nights are cool with lows in the mid 50's. Humidity may feel "sticky" with muggy evenings. Expect a lot of rainy days in the Summer.

Fall temperatures are cold with averages in the upper 40's and highs in the upper 50's. Nights are cold with lows in the upper 30's. Expect a lot of rainy days in the Fall.

What Job or Volunteer Opportunities Does Schroon Lake Region Offer For Retirees?

There is not a lot of job opportunities during the winter months as we are tourist based economy. However there are many jobs through out the spring, summer, and fall for housekeeping, restaurant work, chamber of commerce help, and etc.
