Area Description

From an extensive trail system to the excitement of ice hockey, Urbandale embraces recreational variety. Take a trip back in time at Living History Farms, one of the state's top tourism attractions. Not only can visitors experience Iowa's rich ag history, but they can also attend many events at the Farms, such as historical dinners, events for children and more. This attraction changes frequently so visitors can experience something different with every visit.

For summer fun, residents enjoy the breathtaking scenery strolling along the City's extensive trail system with more than 40 miles of maintained trails. Urbandale is proud to be home of one of the largest 4th of July celebrations in the metro area. The celebration showcases community pride with a parade, musical entertainment, carnival, vendors and of course large fireworks.

Fall is a busy time for Urbandale. With the weather changing, residents can keep up the fun of summer by taking it indoors to enjoy the Des Moines Metro's only indoor public swimming pool. If entertainment is part of the itinerary, experience a Des Moines Buccaneers hockey game, take in a movie or dine at one of Urbandale's restaurants.

In the winter, residents enjoy outdoor activities such as sledding and ice skating on indoor sheets of ice found in town. One of Urbandale's most unique part is the sledding hill. The hill is opened when there is four-inch snow base. A warming room with a fireplace and concessions are available in the adjacent Metro Ice facility.
