Each community hosts many plays and concerts, and in the summer several communities offer free concerts in the evening. We have two symphonies: the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, and the Midland Symphony Orchestra.
The Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw was built in 1927 as a vaudeville theater, and was recently renovated for several million dollars, and hosts concerts and movies throughout the year, bringing in national known artists. Nearby is the Dow Event Center and First Merit Event Park, locations for concerts, plays, family and sporting events. The Dow Event Center is home to the Saginaw Spirit Ontario Hockey League, with games beginning in September throughout March and April.
Midland is home to the Dow Diamond, home to the Great Lakes Loons, a minor league affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Midland was voted the best Tennis Town in the U.S., and hosts an annual tennis tournament.
Bay City is located at the mouth of the Saginaw River and Lake Huron. It has a small beach at the Bay City Recreation Area, which also has many campsites.
Saginaw County is home to the Shiawassee National Wildlife Area, the largest refuge in Michigan's lower peninsula. Birders will find lots to capture with their cameras and binoculars. The Refuge also offers hunting, but only through a lottery system; space is limited. The Region is known for the best walleye in the state, and fishermen travel to the area to catch them, and other species.
We have museums in all three major cities and also an accredited zoo: The Children's Zoo at Celebration Square. Saginaw also has a sister-city with Tokushima, Japan, and has an authentic tea house, just one of a few in the nation.
All three counties are multi-cultural, and have festivals celebrating them. All three counties also boast beautiful architecture. Midland is known for the Alden B. Dow Home and Studio. Alden Dow studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and many homes in Midland reflect the style. Midland is the world headquarters of Dow Chemical Company and Dow Corning.
